Join Douglas Connect at SOT-ToxExpo 2018

At last year’s Society of Toxicology Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Douglas Connect introduced ITS SkinSens, the Integrated Testing Strategy for skin sensitisation it developed with and for Procter and Gamble (P&G). At SOT 2018, opening on March 11 in San Antonio, Douglas Connect will demonstrate the latest findings for improving Bayesian network-based ITS systems and extending them to other endpoints. Visitors to the Douglas Connect booth (#1669) will see new case studies solving different Integrated Testing Strategy problems.

Collaboration, community and socializing data

‘Companies are understandably worried about sharing data, but they are now moving towards the idea that socializing their data is beneficial. We bring the optimal organization to help them do that.’

The collaboration with Procter & Gamble has been universally beneficial, says Dr. Thomas Exner, Douglas Connect’s Chief Scientific Officer. “P&G had developed a quality approach highly accepted and requested by the scientific community, but the data analysis system was specific to their needs. We developed an integrated and extensible application based on their data and methodology and made it securely available – which has benefited P&G and the entire toxicological community.

Part scientific research consultant, part software developer, Douglas Connect is a unique hybrid bringing specialized solutions to a number of different fields. In February, Douglas Connect was one of the winners of the first phase of the CRACK IT DART Paths competition, sponsored by Shell and Syngenta. Its winning project, to build a developmental and reproductive toxicology (DART) knowledge infrastructure platform, will allow the toxicology community to work together to limit animal testing. “Douglas Connect founded OpenTox, so collaboration is part of our DNA,” says Dr. Barry Hardy, CEO, Douglas Connect.

Some 6,800 toxicologists and 350 toxicology-related exhibitors are expected to gather in San Antonio to share their latest work developing Toxicology for the 21st Century. “SOT will feature over 160 exciting sessions - a good place to get the latest thinking on toxicological research,” says Dr. Hardy.  “We are looking forward to discussing with members of the community the knowledge integration required to reliably solve practical workflow problems in both research and assessment.”

Complimentary data counselling

'People who stop by the Douglas Connect booth will get more than a demo. We’ll help you spot the critical connections that can support your work.’

One of Douglas Connect’s convictions is that big data offers extraordinary possibilities for science, but only if fully interactive, deep analysis is available to make the most of it. Dr. Hardy raised the issue at the National Academy of Science workshop on environmental health, February 20: “We need to provide feedback to subsequent research iterations on knowledge gaps and data filling to reduce uncertainty. And improve models of toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics responses. The work to prepare high-quality datasets and related metadata has a clear return on investment downstream in data integration, analysis and risk assessment.”

To this end, Douglas Connect plans to offer some hands-on help at SOT 2018. “People who stop by the Douglas Connect booth will get more than a demo,” says Dr. Frank Hollinger, Vice-President of Corporate Operations, Americas. “We want you to come and explain your problems. We will draw your workflows and help you spot the critical connections that can support your work - all for free at the show.”
